Chia Seed History and Origin:

The little chia seed is gaining popularity, so it’s worth a look. Chia seeds can be black or white (brown indicates that the seed is unripe). There’s no difference nutritionally. White or black, this little seed has a lot to be proud of. Let’s talk about how it all began. The Aztecs boast the first record of Chia as early as 3500B.C. It was, in fact, one of the most main foods in the Aztec diet. The prevalence of Chia continued for quite some time. Later, between 1500 and 900B.C, it was grown in Mexico by the Teotihuacan and Toltec people. These people had some surprising uses for the chia seed. Aside from being eaten whole, the chia seed was anciently used for many things. It was used in medicine, ground into flour, mixed as an ingredient in drinks, and pressed for oil. It was useful in that it could be stored for relatively long periods of time (perfect for traveling). In addition to these practical uses, the chia seed ran deeper in the blood of the Aztecs. It was sacred and used as a sacrifice in religious ceremonies.

Like many of the ancient grains, chia was lost for a even as. The Spanish, when they came conquering, banned chia on account of its religious uses. It survived in certain regions of Mexico and has resurfaced for our modern-day use (Lucky us!). Some scientists, nutritionists, and farmers teamed up to cultivate chia commercially in Argentina. Today, chia is grown in several Latin American countries, but its main producer is fast becoming Australia. Unlike our recent ancestors, we have easy access to chia. What a great addition to a healthy diet! Being high in dietary fiber, chia helps promote bowel regularity and healthy stool. The rich fiber content in chia seeds also helps people feel more full quicker because it absorbs a considerable amount of water and immediately expands in the stomach when eaten.

Health Benefits of Chia Seeds:

When it comes to brain health, omega fatty acids are all the rage. They have been found to help reduce ADD and ADHD and chia seeds are a great source of them for vegetarians and vegans who don’t want to take fish oils. They are considered a superfood on account of the variety of valuable nutrients in them that give you so much of the daily nutrients your body needs, like protein and calcium. These seeds are also popular because they are so easy to prepare and to clean up which is great for people with a busy lifestyle who don’t want to sacrifice their health. Originally grown in Mexico, the seeds were highly valued for their medicinal properties and nutritional value. In fact, they were even used as currency!

Strengthens Bones:

chia seeds have more calcium than dairy products. So, if you’re looking to strengthen your bones, this is a food without the high fat content associated with consuming dairy products. Many people develop an intolerance, even if it’s just mild, to dairy as they get older. When calcium intake becomes a concern, chia seeds are an excellent supplement to your diet. You’ll be able to also try to get 10-15 minutes of sunshine daily or eat mushrooms for vitamin D which will help break down the calcium. Bone health is essential for healthy aging and injury prevention. Chia seeds contain other minerals that are essential to your health such as magnesium and phosphorus.

Excellent Protein Content:

Humans are said to need anywhere from 25 grams to 100 grams of protein each day depending on size and activity level. Chia is an improbable source of protein and it is the choice of many pro athletes, like the world famous surfer Kelly Slater. They also contain amino acids which will help break down the protein into energy for your body instead of being stored. The omega-3 acids will also help your body use the protein and minerals in the seeds as well as give your brain a healthy fat that you wish to have for energy. This is a food that non-meat eaters incorporate into smoothies, sprinkle on salads, and make into cereals with granola and yogurt. It becomes gelatinous like tapioca pudding after adding any type of liquid and stirring it for just a few minutes.

Energizing:

The problem that most of the people have with food choices is that they eat unhealthy food when they are low on energy. The cool thing about chia seeds is that they may be able to help boost your energy without giving you anything that is harmful to your body. Next time, instead of reaching for a bag of chips or an energy drink, You’ll be able to have a snack of chia seeds with chopped up fruit and feel great. Instead of getting complex carbohydrates, hydrogenated oils, trans fats, and refined sugars that will make you crash and gain weight, You’ll be able to feel great and lose weight by eating chia seeds. They are completely raw and unprocessed without unhealthy chemicals or preservatives that most snacks have which are toxic to your body.

Skin & Aging:

This past July, researchers from Mexico uncovered that chia seeds had a total natural phenolic (antioxidants) concentration nearly two times higher than previously reported, and the antioxidant activity was shown to stop up to 70% of free radical activity. Essentially proving that chia seeds are one of nature’s riches antioxidants. Antioxidants speed up the skin’s repair systems, and prevent further damage. Taking chia seeds can prevent premature skin aging due to inflammation free radical damage. Fiber is essential for your body’s ability to balance insulin levels.  According to the National Institute of Health, seeds like flax and chia can be a natural blood sugar balancer due to it’s high fiber content and healthy fats.

 Heart Health:

Chia seeds’ ability to reverse inflammation, regulate cholesterol and lower blood pressure make it extremely beneficial to consume for heart health. Also, by reversing oxidative stress, someone is less likely to develop atherosclerosis when they’re frequently consuming chia seeds. A recent study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning concluded that consuming chia seeds enhanced exercise performance for workouts that lasted 90 minutes the same way a sugar-laden sports drink would, but without all the sugar. By adding a serving of chia seeds a day You’ll be able to help boost your metabolism and burn belly fat as well! Studies show that the addition of chia seeds to your diet also reduces visceral adipose tissue, a “belly fat” tissue that effects the metabolism of the body and is a component of obesity!
