What is L-Lysine?
L-lysine is an essential amino acid used by the body as a building block for many functions important to growth and maintenance of health. It is available in many food sources but may also be taken with caution as a dietary supplement by people who need additional doses of lysine. Lysine is an amino acid found in the protein of foods such as beans, cheese, yogurt, meat, milk, brewer’s yeast, wheat germ, and other animal proteins. Proteins derived from grains such as wheat and corn have a tendency to be low in lysine content. The bioavailability of lysine is reduced with food preparation methods, such as heating foods in the presence of a reducing sugar (ie, fructose or glucose); heating foods in the presence of sucrose or yeast; and cooking in the absence of moisture at high temperatures. The average 70 kg human requires 800 to 3,000 mg of lysine daily.
What Are the Benefits of Taking L-Lysine?
Although more than 300 different amino acids exist in nature, only 20 serve as building blocks for proteins, and lysine is one of them. Most of these amino acids occur as stereoisomers, which means there are two forms of each – the D form and the L form – that are mirror images of each other. Only the L form of amino acids becomes incorporated into protein and gets used by your body. In addition to contributing to protein structure, some L-amino acids, such as lysine, might benefit your health when taken as a dietary supplement. For years lysine has been used to bolster the body’s immune function, but recent studies have shown that lysine deficiency leads to immune deficiency. L-lysine is an important and indispensable component of proteins. As previously mentioned, it plays a role in the production of carnitine and collagen.
- Promotes normal growth and development by increasing collagen formation
- Supports the production of other proteins like enzymes, antibodies
- Promotes bone health by increasing calcium absorption; prevents weak bones by reducing bone loss
- Helps convert fatty acids to energy, aiding in weight reduction
- Helps lower bad cholesterol levels, thus reducing the risk for heart problems
- Promotes skin health through increased collagen formation
- May relieve migraines and other types of pain and inflammation
- Helps in muscle building, when taken with other amino acids like arginine
L-lysine For Athletic Performance Enhancement:
Increasing your intake of lysine may help reinforce your athletic performance. Amino acids such as lysine are the building blocks of proteins. Along with other amino acids in your body, lysine may help maintain lean body mass and healthy growth and development. You’ll build your muscle and also repair the muscle tissue with the lysine benefits. Amino acids are very useful for building new muscle and if there is a damaged tissue, it can repair it naturally. So you will need to to have enough lysine in the body for that reason.
L-lysine Increased Calcium Absorption:
Lysine helps your body readily absorb calcium and reduces the amounts of calcium excreted from the body in urine. Your body uses calcium in a variety of different processes including bone development. Adding a lysine supplement to your diet may help limit bone loss, progressive bone loss and diminished bone density. L-lysine also affects nitric oxide levels and collagen synthesis, both of which have an immediate effect on bone health. Everyone knows that calcium is critical for strong bones. L-lysine helps the body to absorb the calcium and decreases the excretion of calcium. L-lysine may increase the activity of bone and collagen building cells. Decreasing the loss of calcium and increasing bone-building activity may slow the bone loss that happens with age.
L-lysine May Fights Bad Cholesterol:
Your liver manufactures a compound called “carnitine” that helps to convert fat to energy. To create carnitine, you wish to have two essential amino acids: L-lysine and methionine. L-lysine supplements can ensure that the liver has enough of the compound to properly burn fat. Research studies Enhance the idea that by helping to burn fat, L-lysine lowers the levels of LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream.
